Why is Understanding Cultural Diversity So Important to Businesses Now?

In today’s global environment, failing to learn about cultural diversity matters can cripple the business success you might otherwise enjoy.

Because we no longer live in isolated communities and countries as we have for untold generations, it’s more important than ever to take more than a passing interest in the variables that makes other cultures tick. When we do, opportunities for dialogue and commerce grow exponentially, allowing people to prosper in ways unimaginable in earlier times.

Consider the many ways in which cultural diversity and cultural awareness can benefit businesses and communities:

  • The Internet has made it possible to do business across the globe, and to outsource jobs that would normally remain within national boundaries. This increases a business’s exposure in ways both good and bad. Unless business leaders learn how to take advantage of new avenues of commerce and interaction, they may be left behind, wondering what happened
  • International travel has opened the way to increased immigration and global commerce, making the world “smaller” and less homogeneous. Unless businesses capitalize on the influx of newcomers and utilize their skills and abilities in a workplace environment that makes them feel welcome and valued, the potential loss in revenue and contributions is immense. Knowing why newly arrived workers think and behave the way they do helps management and other employees communicate better with them.

Our own culture was programmed into us as children. How we speak, even where we pause while speaking, was taught to us by elders and siblings. By honoring and accepting the programmed-in culture of an international visitor or immigrant, we allow ourselves to pass through initial feelings of “otherness” and form new bonds of friendship and understanding, which quickly translate into additional areas of mutual benefit.

When we focus on the strengths of each culture and utilize them in our business environments, the synergies that can result may well catapult the capabilities of an office from a slothful standstill to a bullet train in very little time.
